Shallow inlet is an inlet separated from the ocean by a sand bar. At low tide there are channels between sand banks that are wide enough for kitesurfing/windsurfing, while at high tide the sand is covered to create a wide area of flat water. Shallow Inlet is where many have tried to set speed records in fixed wing yachts, and has been a well known spot for windsurfers for years. Probably the best speed kiting location on the planet. You need a Westerly - Southwesterly. Also in this direction 2 kilometers of perfectly flat water for freestyle. Just watch for sailboards and kiters doing speed runs! Cross over the sand spit for great wave sailing in almost any direction. There is a beach that you can drive onto (careful of the king tides) and launch safely right from next to your car. Being an inlet, there are areas suitable for almost any wind direction, however a W or NW are least preferred as they are offshore from the main launch area. Winds can often get up to 30 or 40 knots or more, so a small kite can come in handy, although you will get plenty of days in the 15-25 knot range for at least part of the day. The weather in Melbourne ranges from highs around 10-15°C in winter to high 20's°C and into the 30's°C in summer, occasionally reaching 40°C. Water: Shallow, Flat, Smallwave, Mediumwave. Features: Toilet. Rider ability: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert.
