Enclosed bay, flat to choppy, depending on wind direction and strength, tides not much of a factor here. Rip rap jetty and concrete fishing pier to the south, industrial boatyard to the north, so either stay upwind or stay close to the beach. Nice open waterway with minimal boat traffic except for holiday weekends. Lots of stingrays, so try to stay up. Lots of sharp rocks, recommend using foot protection of some sort. Small beach on eastern shore of San Diego Bay, mixed soft and hard-packed sand, grassy rigging area. Assisted landings or walk kite to large lawn north of bathroom to self land. Launch is sand (walk through mud at extreme low tides). Intermediate spot due to the compact launch and landing area and the necessity of staying upwind due to lack of sandy beaches away from launch. Wind can be strong during winter and spring storms. Spring and early summer thermals from Northwest most consistent. Typically big gear. Local 'Catalina Eddy' effect can produce strong Southerlies at times with glassy powered up conditions in the lee of the levee at south end of bay. Santa Ana Easterlies are offshore and can be tremendously gusty. There are accessible launches on the western shore of the bay if you want to sail in a Santa Ana. Typically sunny and warm, 60's°F in the winter 70's and 80's°F in the summer. Water temp from low 60's°F in winter to mid 70's°F in summer. Full suit only on the coldest winter days, spring suit in late fall and early spring, shorts and rashguard late spring through late summer. Kiteable year round. Water: Shallow, Flat, Chop.
