The sound is an enclosed lagoon about 2 miles long by 1/2 mile wide. The deepest point is about 8 feet but most of the area is chest deep. The water is flat but can become choppy if the wind is strong. Tidal change is about 2 feet and really does not affect things much. There is a lot of beach but it is very narrow. The water is shallow so it is easy to launch from the water. There is another launch at the eastern end of the lagoon that is rocky but is awesome on a Southeaster because you can do a nice downwinder. The wind is generally sideshore or sideonshore. The prevailing winds are easterly. NE in winter and SE in summer. The wind in winter is typically 15-20 knots but can be very gusty. The summers are dead calm unless we have tropical systems moving through. Tropical systems in summer mean either no wind or 35+ knots. The best time is winter from late November to about April. The water temperature varies between the high 70's°F in the winter and the mid to high 80's°F in the summer. The air temperature in winter never gets much below 76°F and in summer seldom gets over 90°F. A wetsuit is never necessary although lycras are great for sun protection. Water: Shallow, Flat, Chop. Features: Shower, Toilet, Food. Rider ability: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert.
